Updated March 20, 2024.

One of my favorite solo weekend trips from D.C. is to Harpers Ferry, WV. This charming town is under 1 1/2 hours from D.C., is affordable, and has some of my favorite things, hiking and history. During my first visit, I fell in love with Rockhaven B&B. Keep reading to see my #1 recommendation on where to stay in Harpers Ferry.

Rockhaven B&B

Built in 1927, the name Rockhaven was chosen by the current owners Lynn and Christian, who actually got married in the garden (so sweet!). The B&B opened in January 2017, so everything is new and fresh. With 2 suites, gardens, free parking, and close proximity to all the fun to be had, this is the only place you should be booking when visiting Harpers Ferry.

A bit of cool history is that the original owners, William and Inez Saunders, both worked at Storer College. A prominent institution founded in 1865, it’s mission was to educate former slaves. Before its closing in 1955, it was admitting students of both genders and all races. And Lynn has recently written the first published biography about William! If you want to learn more, visit Rockhaven’s history page.

Rockhaven today is such a wonderful blend of the past and the present. I truly appreciated all the touches that give a nod to the house’s origins, while still offering all the modern-day conveniences that, I don’t know about y’all, but I could not do without.

Breakfast

The term B&B wouldn’t be complete without a yummy breakfast each morning. Y’all know I love my food, and Rockhaven did not disappoint. Each morning I received a homemade fruit parfait, muffins, oatmeal, and everything I’d need if I drank coffee. It was just enough to get me going each day. And of course the kitchenette had a mini-fridge, microwave, toaster and blender if I wanted other food.

The Studebaker Suite

Perfect for: Those who love a vintage feel with luxurious spa-like amenities.
Interior: Queen bed, kitchenette, twin convertible sofa bed, claw foot tub, rain shower head, chandelier, woodstove.
Outdoor Amenities: Lounge area in the garden, right outside the door.
To Book: Booking is available through the website or Airbnb.

Out of my numerous visits, I have stayed in the garden level suite, The Studebaker, twice. From the first moment I pulled up to Rockhaven, I knew I was going to enjoy my stay. It is situated on a corner lot, with lovely gardens and a wrought-iron gate. Owner and host Lynn told me the gate is mainly to keep the deer out of the garden. I loved this glimpse into small-town life. With this lovely first impression, I made my way to check in, passing the front porch swing just begging to be used.

After checking in, I proceeded through the gorgeous garden to the private entrance to The Studebaker. Anyone who knows me knows I love a good garden or outdoor area, so this place was right up my alley. In fact, it was so nice that I considered it an extension of my suite. I thoroughly enjoyed it both in the summer and the fall. I can’t wait to come back in the Spring to see how it compares.

Making it to my suite, I punched the code into the keypad and was welcomed into a vintage retreat. Complete with woodstove, brick walls and industrial touches, the suite was just the right blend of vintage and luxurious. Plus, the bed was stacked with so many cozy pillows and blankets that I always got a good night’s sleep. The layout of the suite is nice too, as it has a designated sitting area, bar seating, bedroom area with curtain partition, and spacious bathroom. It was plenty of room for me, but I think it could fit 3 people comfortably.

My Favorite Feature

My absolute favorite part of the suite was the bathroom. The claw-foot tub, rain shower head, and chandelier (yes, in the bathroom) made for a luxury experience. Plus the personal touches made me feel like I was at a 5-star resort spa. Who doesn’t love lavender bubble bath and plush robes and slippers? I tell you what! It was nice to pamper myself after a full day of hiking and exploring the town.

Inez’s Sweet Retreat

Perfect for: Couples on a romantic getaway or those who enjoy a cottage feel.
Interior: Queen bed, kitchenette, sky light in bathroom, tons of natural lighting, window seats.
Outdoor Amenities: A private balcony to enjoy breakfast or take in a sunset.
To Book: Booking is available through the website or Airbnb.

For a cozy cottage feel, go with the Inez Suite. This charming suite, named after one of the original owners of the house, is accessed through the main house. Once you get to the 3rd floor, it becomes a completely private retreat. Lynn and Christian were kind enough to let me take a peek during my last visit. Here are my impressions and highlights.

My first impression when entering the suite was the overwhelmingly welcoming charm and comfort that I felt. I instantly could see myself curling up with a good book in the window seat or relaxing during a rainstorm. From the color scheme of pinks and creams, to the cottage-style touches, this suite is ideal for a romantic getaway.

My Favorite Feature

Probably my favorite thing about Inez’s Sweet Retreat was the private balcony. It complemented the suite perfectly, with its adorable furniture and lacy curtains on the sliding glass door. Plus, it just looks like a great place to enjoy the gardens and fresh air. This is the only outdoor space on the property that is entirely private, which I think is a nice touch.

Bonus: The Tiny Cabin

Perfect for: Those who want a more rustic vibe or wish to try out a tiny house.
Interior: Convertible bed (2 twins or 1 king), kitchenette, rain shower head.
Outdoor Amenities: A spacious screened-in porch with lounge chairs and outdoor kitchen table and sink.
To Book: Booking for this cabin is
available through Airbnb.

Although separate from the B&B, there is another great place to stay on the property, Camp Hike-n-Bike Cabin. The rustic tiny cabin has a 1940’s Park Service feel, with fun retro touches. It even has Camp Rules posted on the outside as you walk up.

My most recent visits have been to this tiny cabin, and I think it may be my new favorite! It features a private entrance, screened-in porch, and the option to convert the bed either into a king or 2 twins. It has everything I need for solo weekend trip.

The Outdoor Space

I mentioned the garden briefly earlier, but I need to mention the outdoor space again. Lynn and Christian have put a ton of work into making the outdoor space amazing for guests, with a fire pit, twinkle lights, and numerous seating areas. It is a definite bonus living space in nice weather!

I hope that I have convinced you to visit Harpers Ferry and Rockhaven B&B on your next getaway. If you’re wondering what Harpers Ferry has to offer, Lynn describes its appeal perfectly.

I think people come here because it’s a really charming little step-back-in-time historic town with both beautiful buildings and natural scenery in every direction. PLUS there’s lots of outdoor recreation options. Rivers, mountains, trails all within an hour or so drive from DC-Baltimore-NOVA and Pennsylvania.
